You might take consolation in the fact that America is not endemically corrupt, not a broken society and not an undrainable swamp as are many nations in the world. But what happens if you add globalization to the mix? What happens when you sprinkle graft, bribery and unholy alliances into the new supranational context?

We have known corruption in the past, but what we haven’t known are its consequences in a more precarious global age.

There are at least three factors that should concern us. The first is that leaders lead in a very different world. Second, fewer leaders are prepared for this world, and third, the new world enables the effects of ethical misconduct to scale to unprecedented orders of magnitude.

In my coaching work with CEOs, it’s abundantly clear that the globalizing environment is acting as a crucible that either melts or refines the leader. Leaders are subjected to more speed, greater complexity and limited resources — all with the same high expectations.

Turbulence is the new normal and there’s no prospect of a spontaneous return to order. Just look around; the familiar bastion of the conventional business cycle is gone. If there’s no status quo ante, what’s the result? It’s really quite simple: More pressure to perform and more temptation to engage in ethical misconduct.

The litmus test is the collision of stewardship and self-interest. Name a spectacular fall from grace that was about skills, knowledge or experience? When leaders go down, they go down from the inside out. It’s a collapse of character.

Consider one of the most recent floats in the scandal parade — Mark Hurd, the recently ousted CEO of HP. He is a smart and talented person, but we need to be careful not to cling to a belief that leadership is mostly about IQ points and the charismatic arts, as if they will save us. They never will — especially not in an ethically and morally interdependent global age.

The risks of ethical misconduct have become unknown and unknowable. With the connectivity of global supply chains, we are vulnerable to the effects of ethical misdeeds performed almost anywhere on earth. Pet food, peanuts, toothpaste, tires, Bernie Madoff and the sub-prime mortgage crisis prove that we have entered an era in which a few bad actors can create a geo-ethical shock that incurs loss for millions of people.

If risk equates to probability multiplied by magnitude, we need to be more willing to take our leaders to task for their personal failings. Personal failings have not only personal consequences, but also unintended and far-reaching public consequences.

Dishonorable acts are now globally scalable in their effects. Leadership is alluring. It tempts one to use position for personal gain. Its culminating test is to resist that temptation, but as we all observe, many succumb.

It frequently begins as a flirtation of ego that ends in a vortex of corruption. The ambition to govern one’s fellow beings tends to view leadership as the pathway to a glittering world of personal reward. And so, under pretense of leading, those of unbridled ambition seek it out and then let us down. Hence, we observe a teeming gallery of venal characters auctioned to the highest bidder.

It continues to puzzle me that our public discourse on ethics tends to focus on the back end of achieving compliance and little on the front end of developing moral values. Nor do we talk enough about putting those who want to be our leaders under tougher scrutiny. And yet we live in a society in which many who have not demonstrated the ability to lead themselves lead us.

So it’s more than antiquarian charm to say that leaders should be honest and morally excellent. Civil society ultimately depends on it as a functional necessity and the last line of defense. As a practical matter, we need to vet candidates for leadership in every arena on character requirements more rigorously then we do. We need to test their moral bearing capacity so that when stewardship and self-interest collide — and they certainly will — there’s a good chance the leader won’t buckle.

Let’s not forget that leadership begins in the inner world. It’s about the empire of the heart. To be fit to lead has nothing whatever to do with being rich and well-born or even charismatic — dogmas from which we are still recovering. We need men and women of unflinching character to step out of the crisis, steeled for the leadership journey of the 21st century.

First, I give this book the highest recommendation of any book I have listed before.



This is one of the very few books I am making a study guide over the next few months. It has been for me the third book in a series of books by the Arbinger Institute, the preceding being “Leadership and Self Deception” and “The Anatomy of Peace”. This book is actually by one of the clinician PhD’s from the Arbinger. Enough about that…except to say I recommend reading these books in this order as they tended to build on each other for me, however they each stand on their own.



This book has truly helped me in a sense that no other self help or improvement book has ever done. Maybe it has to do with the idea of ‘when the student is ready the teacher appears’…but it is my belief that this book helped me be a willing and open student. Using its techniques, if you can call them that, and attitude I have had my world opened up and turned upside down and then comfortably rearranged in a way that has brought me success and happiness, two traits I have been seeking and continue to seek in my life. If you are like me and want more of this in your life then I can highly recommend you read and study this book. It is excellent.



As a last note, I appreciate all of those who have played such vital roles in my life, that is you, my family, friends and business associates. The relationships you have had with me have brought me a lot of success, satisfaction and happiness. As well, so much of my success has been the result of challenges I have had to face. Therefore I want to also express my thanks for those experiences that have brought about a deep change in me. Without them I would be even more difficult be live with!…so you, as my friends, should be thankful for me having them as well…

Great book on the mechanics of selling/persuasion. A little too detailed and long winded. However if you want a bible on the ‘how to’ of selling this book is it. Be prepared to trudge through some parts of it. I am about half way through and don’t know if I will ever finish all of it.

A friend of mine told me about this guy, now I look forward to reading his book. He delivers a great message here that everyone can profit from. Thanks to all of you who go out and help change the lives of so many for the better.

This is a new must read for my kids and business partners. It reviews all the very best of Napoleon Hill and updates all the material. An excellent success guide.



There are some things that are discussed in it that are not very well understood by the writer…however I am certain were he alive today he would approach the subjects a little differently. But there are other books that better address these weaknesses, like ‘Leadership and Self-Deception’ and “The Anatomy of Peace’.



So go get this book as a long term education program. Do not look at it as just another book but rather a course in having a successful life, espescially in terms of accumulation of wealth. This is not a quick read instead it is a guide on specific activities and processes of making your life have more successful outcomes.



I actually listened to the audio book while I was driving through and back from Canada the last couple of days. I bought the book. It is big at almost 500 pages…but remember this is a course of study over a number of days not a book to be consumed in one big marathon (like I did, which is why I bought the book so I can now use it as a course of study over the next 6 months).

This is a great quick read. Only like 130 or so pages written in a fable/story format to teach five business/life principals for having a successful fulfilled life. I really liked this little book and would highly recommend it to anybody looking to build a business of any kind.



I am going to review this book again before I head out tomorrow morning with the objective of memorizing the five principles it teaches. Really applicable and meaningful rules to operate by. I hope you go out and read this little book soon and get as much out of it as I did. There is something to be said for simple, easy stories with strong meanings…they are easy to grasp, apply and find value in.

Wow. Another book I could not put down. Where the first book ‘Leadership and Self Deception’ opened my mind and gave it a good premise to start from, this book filled my mind with how to do it. I highly recommend you read them in order although they do stand alone. I got so much out of them reading them this way and believe that most people probably do to…from what I have read.



When the book first started I did not think I would end up giving it this high of a review so you might want to consider that for yourself. An attitude of sticking with it will give you really meaninful rewards I believe.



I want to thank the authors for this well written and thoughtful book. And also I want to thank my wife and children for the lessons I learn from each of them everyday. And lastly to my parents and extended family and friends, thank you for being a part of my life and the many lessons over the too many years you have tried to teach me, even when I have been unwilling to be taught. May I be a better student, may you not give up on me and may we all live better lives of peace within.
