The Acai berry and other antioxidants

Posted by admin On May - 18 - 2009

Antioxidants are a very important part of maintaining a healthy body and mind.  There are many different kinds of antioxidants and many of them can be found in natural foods like fruits and vegetables.  The acai is known as one of the healthiest foods on earth and contains many different antioxidants that are good for your body.

Antioxidants are important for many different reasons.  Basically an antioxidant is a molecule that can slow down or prevent the occurrence of oxidation of other molecules.  Oxidation can produce what are called free radicals which can start chain reactions within the body that damage cells.  Antioxidants stop the degradation of cells by stopping the chain reactions and inhibiting the oxidation of molecules by being oxidized themselves.  Oxidation cycles are very important for life but can also be damaging to the body as well.  For this reason, plants and animals have very complex systems in place to help reduce the effects of oxidation.  Some antioxidants are more familiar to people than others.  Vitamins such as vitamin C and E are antioxidants but so is glutathione, which you have probably never heard of.

The use of antioxidants in pharmacology is studied constantly and scientists are always spending time in labs trying to find out which antioxidants will help reduce or reverse the problems that humans experience because of aging and disease.  Because of the results of studies on antioxidants, many are included in vitamin supplements and other nutritional foods.  Antioxidants also have other properties that make them good preservatives in food and cosmetic applications.  They also help reduce the degradation of rubber and gasoline.  These more industrial applications are also very important to the antioxidant industry and the benefits they can provide for people.

Measuring antioxidants isn’t always an easy process and can be very complex.  They can also deteriorate very quickly and can only last as long as the fruit that contains them.  There are also some questions about how they are absorbed and how much translates from a food into useful antioxidants in the body.  Some of the most important antioxidants for the body areVitamin C, Vitamin E, Polyphenolic oxidants, resveratrol, flavonoids and carotenoids such as lycopene and carotenes.  Some antioxidants are actually produced in the body and are not absorbed from foods.  Glutathione is one that is made from amino acids in the body.  But it is broken down in the intestinal tract before it can be absorbed, so the body has to make it on its own.

Acai is a fruit that is said to have tremendous medicinal and nutritional value.  It has been a staple of natives of the Amazon rainforest for hundreds of years and has recently become more popular in America.  Many different antioxidants have been found to be contained in the acai berry and the products that are made from it.  Acai is really unique because it is packed with so many different nutrients in such high quantities.  It has many different amino acids and also has a high protein content as well as omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids which are essential to good body function.  It is also rich in Vitamins A and B and other vitamins that act as antioxidants.  Acai also contains twelve flavonoid compounds and also has proanthocyanidins.  Oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) is used to determine how many free radicals are absorbed by a compound and it has been found that acai has a very high absorption rate.  The seeds inside the fruit have also been found to have high free radical contents along with many other benefits.  There are many reasons why so much of the world is turning to acai for health benefits and nutrition.  It is quickly becoming one of the most popular and most important breakthroughs in medial history.  It will long be an important source of nutrition and vitamins for people in the Amazon rainforest as well as other countries as long as it can be harvested and the demand for it can be met.

Using supplements effectively

Posted by admin On May - 17 - 2009

Supplements are an excellent solution for those who find themselves lacking in certain areas of their nutrition.  Supplements come in all shapes, sizes and types.  Some supplements are in the form of a multivitamin, others are in powder form and some supplements are in the form of a juice or shake.  These different types of supplements are designed to enhance specific aspect of health in varying degrees of effectiveness and strength.  Using supplements is not as simple as going to the store and picking out a variety of pills that look good to you.  Effective supplement use involved a total care system where each supplement is used in conjunction with other vitamins, minerals and effective natural ingredients that are designed to address the big picture of health instead of just a snap shot of one or two areas of health.

The first step in adopting any kind of supplement routine is to involve your physician.  There are advantages and side effects to just about every supplement that you will find on the market.  Do not assume that simply because you find a supplement that is not sold by prescription that it is safe.  There are many instances when combining certain supplements with each other or taking certain supplements while you are on a medication could yield serious and dangerous results. Health professionals are becoming more and more interested in the benefits that supplements can provide to their patients and are therefore likely to be able to help you with the concerns that you may have.   Your physician can be an invaluable guide to you as you decide which supplements are best for your unique medical make-up.  Your physician can go over any adverse side effects that may result from your use of a given supplement.  If your doctor is not able to help you, you may consider discussing both your medical history and your interest in specific supplements with a doctor that has more experience or has taken more time to study supplements.

As there is no widely accepted quality measurement system when it comes to supplements, you will need to choose the brand of products that you intend to use very carefully.  Do not assume that because products have the same name or ingredients, that they will be of the same quality.  Take close note of the manufacturer and the distributor of the products that you are interested in.  Larger distributors and manufactures have generally been in the dietary supplement field longer and thus have more experience that they bring to the table.   If you have no other references available, it is generally best to visit a health food company or a pharmaceutical company to find the right supplements.

One example of a quality supplement that has research and medical studies that back up their claims of usefulness in their blend of supplements is the company that uses the highly effective amino acid, L-Arginine, in their mix of supplements.  This line is offered by the Synergy WorldWide Company and is called ProArgi-9 Plus.  For more information on this specific line and to get involved in the movement to help others realize the health benefits of dietary supplements visit these links: www.ericglenn.com, www.synergyteamglobal.com.

Although it is perfectly acceptable to take more than one supplement at once, know that it is dangerous to experiment with combinations and doses yourself.  You should leave these formulations up to the experts who have the medical training to know what combinations are the safest and most effective.  When you have chosen a safe supplement (such as the one suggested above) make sure that you follow the instructions for use so that you can judge for yourself whether or not the supplements that you choose work effectively for you.  But remember that it may take some time to see results.  Experts suggest using a supplement for at least a month, by that time you should be able to notice a difference if the supplement is working for you the way that it is intended.

Fighting back against free radicals

Posted by admin On May - 16 - 2009

Free radicals are a process in the body that more and more people are becoming acquainted with and are trying to understand.  The health benefits of overcoming free radicals are barely being exploited and many people believe that understanding how to fight back against them will greatly help people to live healthier lives and to advance science as well.

Free radicals are basically loose electrons that can truly wreak havoc on the body and on the cells.  They are created in the body by a process that is called oxidation.  All cells will eventually be broken down and changed into other molecules that can later be used or degrade, or oxidize, and lose electrons that can then roam free in the body.  Oxidation is a naturally occurring process that is necessary and is found in all living organisms in the natural world.  It takes place when cells use oxygen for fuel and the byproduct of the process are called free radicals.  When oxygen is burned, electrons are separated and some are even left isolated and by themselves.  They then look for another electron they can link up with and then find one and can become stable again.  They cannot be completely eliminated and are a natural part of living.  The cells in the body have the ability to control and suppress most free radicals, but some can still wander loose around the body.  If excessive free radicals build up, they can no longer be absorbed by the cells and linked to other electrons and can cause a lot of damage.  Many people believe that this process is one of the main reasons we age.  But there are some enzymes in the cells that can prevent the free radicals from flying around and can repair damage when it occurs because of free radicals.  It is said that free radicals can influence physical and mental aging and can also be responsible for causing caner, arthritis, cardiovascular disease, and other chronic or degenerative diseases.

It is believed that the production of many free radicals that we encounter today may be caused by pollution, radiation and x-rays, smoke and other toxic chemicals, pesticides and other problems that cause excessive stress.  But cells can build their defense against these free radicals by combining enzymes with other minerals like zinc, copper, selenium and manganese.  Antioxidants are another agent that can effectively help reduce and eliminate the presence of free radicals in the body.  Antioxidants work against the power of free radicals by oxidizing themselves and in the process absorbing the free radicals that are let off by oxidation of other cells and molecules in the body.

Antioxidants come in many different forms and can be found in a variety of foods.  Most can be obtained through the diet.  Some foods that are known to be good sources of antioxidants are citrus fruits, green vegetables, tomatoes, potatoes, whole wheat, oatmeal, soybean oil, corn oils, nuts, dairy products, seafood, meat, and seeds.  These are just a few of the good sources of antioxidants that are important in fighting free radicals.  Some of the most common antioxidants are Vitamin C, Vitamin E, and Beta Carotene.  Not all antioxidants have the same function but the process is basically the same.  Different combinations of antioxidants provide protection from different types of free radicals and can help protect the body in different ways.  Many people believe that antioxidants will eventually lead to a cure to cancer and many of the other diseases and infections that cause people so many problems throughout their lives.  Only time will tell what marvels will come from antioxidants in the fight against free radicals.

What nutritional supplements can do for you

Posted by admin On May - 14 - 2009

You are probably familiar with health claims that have been made on a variety of different dietary supplement products.  Some of these health claims are made in the form of an infomercial with a body builder or attractive model trying to convince you that you need their product.  Other health claims are made by actors that are hired to play the role of an experienced medical professional.  And then there are the health claims made for nutritional supplements that are actually backed by scientific research performed by real medical professionals who study at real universities and with real patients.  The trick is to sift out the imitators from the real deal when it comes to deciding what nutritional supplements can do for you.

There are a number of things that you will want to look for in determining what a health supplement can do for you.  You will want to make sure that health claims are backed by scientific evidence.  You will also want to use your common sense and better judgment to decide for yourself if the claims that are being made seem realistic.  Among the health benefits that you will hear about when it comes to supplementing your diet, some of the most reliable supplements are going to be those that are already produced in varying levels by the body.  In this case you truly are simply supplementing a vitamin, mineral or amino acid that you are already producing but may not be producing enough of to keep you feeling your best.

Numerous academic studies have shown that antioxidants play a different and more diverse complimentary role when it comes to providing health benefits through supplementation.  Antioxidants include vital nutrients that our body’s need to work at optimal levels.  These nutrients include beta carotene, vitamins C and E and selenium.  These antioxidants can prevent damage to your body cells or repair damage that has been done.  Antioxidants fight off free radicals (hazardous molecules that damage cells) but our body’s natural production of antioxidants declines as we age.  This is why supplementing our bodies with the antioxidants that we no longer produce but still need to stay healthy is so important.

L-Arginine is an amino acid that aids in the body’s production of nitric oxide.  Nitric oxide is what enables the body to create a healthy flow of blood.  The heart has to work harder if nitric oxide levels in the body are low.  By supplementing with L-Arginine, the nitric oxide levels are kept at their optimum levels, the heart does not have to work as hard to pump blood throughout the body, and we benefit from increased stamina, energy and even sexual performance.  When our heart is healthy, we also increase the likelihood of avoiding the symptoms that escalate into heart disease.  L-Citrulline is beneficial to our systems in that it facilitates the production of L-Arginine because it is converted into L-Arginine.    L-Citrulline helps to rectify this issue of absorption by providing the body with an increase in L-Arginine (through the conversion process or process of synthesis) when and where it is needed most.

Of course it is always a good idea to involve your physician in determining what nutritional supplements are right for you because it does not matter what they can do for you if you have other medical conditions that would make the use of supplements unsafe.

What is L-Citrulline?

Posted by admin On May - 12 - 2009

L-Citrulline is an amino acid that goes through the process of being converted to L-Arginine and then to nitric oxide, thus optimizing blood flow in the body.  This optimization of blood flow helps to alleviate some of the more uncomfortable symptoms of cardiovascular disease as well as provide the individual with more energy, stamina and a stronger immune system.  Sustainable nitric oxide levels are essential for proper circulatory system functioning.  Low levels of nitric oxide leads to physical fatigue and even impotence.

L-Citrulline is considered a non-essential amino acid because it is synthesized in the intestinal tract.  It is then converted into L-Arginine, an amino acid that is them absorbed into the endothelial cells. Arginine is utilized in the liver and kidneys by the enzymes that are located in the intestinal tracks.  Therefore, only a fraction of L-Arginine is able to provide the remainder of the body (after its absorption from the liver and kidneys) with its nitric oxide facilitating benefits.  As Citrulline is a precursor to Arginine, it enables nitric oxide production in the endothelium, where it is needed most by the circulatory system.  L-Citrulline and L-Arginine share the benefits of stimulating the immune system and increasing energy.  They form a complimentary partnership in bettering the function of the heart and even preventing heart attach, vessel disease and stroke.  L-Citrulline is fundamental for urea cycle function as well.

The suggested use for L-Citrulline is as a dietary supplement.  This of course supports the council of medical professionals that eating a well balanced diet as well as exercising are the best ways to stay healthy.  If you choose to supplement your diet with L-Citrulline the suggested dosage is 1 and ¬ teaspoon (3 grams) two times daily, or as directed by a healthcare practitioner.  You should be sure to talk with your doctor before starting any type of supplement plan.  This is especially important if you are on any medications or if you have been diagnosed with any condition for which you are currently being treated.  Even through L-Citrulline is a safe and natural supplement to take, it can create an unhealthy result when combined with other drugs or treatments (as is the case with just about any supplement).  Specifically those who have kidney abnormalities, a hypersensitivity to L-Citrulline or who are under 12 years of age should not take L-Citrulline.

The most common form of L-Citrulline can be found in an oral powder meant to be mixed in with a beverage.  It is also common for L-Citrulline to be used in combination with L-Arginine.  Another thing to remember is that L-Citrulline is probably the best source of cellular L-Arginine; this means that it aids L-Arginine in its function by helping it to be more fully absorbed by more cells in the body.   Cardiovascular disease is the number one killer of Americans.  More and more people are realizing the importance of doing all in their power to assist their body in doing what it does naturally.  By utilizing L-Citrulline appropriately, you could potentially be adding more healthy years to your life.  Talk with your doctor to see if taking an L-Citrulline or L-Arginine supplement is right for you, and start to see what kind of energy and quality of life you have been missing out on.

What is a nutraceutical?

Posted by admin On May - 11 - 2009

Nutraceuticals are natural compounds.  Some examples of natural compounds are vitamins, minerals, omegas, and herbal extracts.  These natural compounds can prevent and even cause the reversal of the progression of some diseases.  People use nutraceuticals in the hopes that they will reverse the aging process.  Specifically, the reversal of aging has been shown possible through the use of nutraceuticals in the areas of reversing the wrinkling of the skin, or reversing the decrease in one?s sexual drive.  Other common terms for a nutraceutical are: phytochemicals, or functional foods.  Another interesting note is that nutraceuticals contain health values that go beyond the actual nutrients that they contain.  Nutraceuticals are growing in popularity as more and more individuals are becoming aware of what they choose to put into their bodies.  Many people looking to benefit form nutraceuticals are trying to get away from the use of drugs or medications of any kind and are looking for something more natural or organic.  Nutraceuticals also provide financial benefits as they are typically much less expensive than prescription drugs and are easier to get as they do not require a prescription.

Nutraceuticals play an important role in our bodies.  Nutraceuticals are unlike the essential nutrients that we get through the food that we eat every day.  Nutraceuticals are not necessary to have in order to live.  Their benefit comes in their ability to protect us from diseases including cancer and cardiovascular disease.  Nutraceuticals are found mainly in fruits and vegetables, in fact, almost all plant foods contain nutraceuticals.  When you go to the supermarket looking for nutraceutical supplements, you are generally going to be able to find those nutraceuticals in quantities much higher than you would typically be able to eat through fruits and vegetables in any given day.

L-Arginine is a nutraceutical and provides benefits specific to the production of nitric oxide and the improvement of blood flow.  The natural consequences of improved blood flow include less stress on the heart which in turn translates into the possible reversal of the symptoms of heart disease.  However, L-Arginine is not the only nutraceutical out there.  Other nutraceuticals that have been shown to reduce the risk of a variety of diseases include Isoflavones, Flavonoids, Ligans, Indoles, Lycopene, Beta-Carotene, Lutein, Allyl sulfides, Dithiolthiones, Quercetin, and Vitamin D.

Of these nutraceuticals, Vitamin D is perhaps the most readily recognized for its health benefits.  Vitamin D has an impressive and some might say amazing ability to ward off diseases.  In a year 2000 study, it was shown that 80% of patients given high doses of vitamin D experienced less breast cancer and 90% experienced less lung cancer.  Vitamin D is found in a variety of foods including milk.  It is also made by our bodies when we are exposed to sunlight.  It is not advised that an individual exposes themselves to too much sun the hopes of acquiring more vitamin D as this increases the risk of skin cancer so the government stepped in and decided to add the recommended doses of vitamin D to the milk that we drink.  According to nutraceutical experts, however, the government was off and we are still not getting the vitamin D that we need even if we are good at drinking milk.  Of course there are dangers to taking too much of any good thing, including vitamin D, so it is best that you talk with your doctor about any desires that you may have to increase your nutraceutical intake and work with him in creating a supplement (that may or may not have to be prescription strength) that can yield the best and safest benefits for you.
