A number of scientific experiments have shown that supplementing one’s diet with certain nitric oxide-boosting substances (i.e. L-Arginine, L-Citrulline, and antioxidants), can eliminate the state of oxidative stress on the arteries and reverse the progression of atherosclerosis (clogging or congestion of the arteries).  What does all of this translate into as far as possible benefits for you and me?  Well, with cardiovascular disease being the number one killer of Americans, whatever we can do to improve our heart health is going to be well worth it.  Now, let’s look at the benefits that each L-Arginine, L-Citrulline and antioxidants has and how they specifically contribute to heart and overall health.

L-Arginine is an amino acid that aids in the body’s production of nitric oxide.  Nitric oxide is what enables the body to create a healthy flow of blood.  The heart has to work harder if nitric oxide levels in the body are low.  By supplementing with L-Arginine, the nitric oxide levels are kept at their optimum levels, the heart does not have to work as hard to pump blood throughout the body, and we benefit from increased stamina, energy and even sexual performance.  When our heart is healthy, we also increase the likelihood of avoiding the symptoms that escalate into heart disease.  L-Citrulline is beneficial to our systems in that it facilitates the production of L-Arginine because it is converted into L-Arginine.  The nutrients that we receive from the food that we eat are distributed throughout our bodies in certain ways.  The majority of the L-Arginine that one would take as a supplement is absorbed by the digestive system.  If there is not enough L-Arginine left after this absorption process, not all of the cells can benefit from the nitric oxide enhancing benefits.  L-Citrulline helps to rectify this issue of absorption by providing the body with an increase in L-Arginine (through the conversion process or process of synthesis) when and where it is needed most.

Antioxidants play a different and more diverse complimentary role when it comes to providing health benefits through supplementation.  Antioxidants include vital nutrients that our body’s need to work at optimal levels.  These nutrients include beta carotene, vitamins C and E and selenium.  These antioxidants can prevent damage to your body cells or repair damage that has been done.  You may have heard the term “free radicals” associated with antioxidants.  Free radicals are hazardous molecules that damage cells and bring about the progression of poor health that comes with aging and disease.  Antioxidants fight off free radicals but our body’s natural production of antioxidants declines as we age.  This is why supplementing our bodies with the antioxidants that we no longer produce but still need to stay healthy is so important.

There are advantages and side effects to just about every supplement that you will find on the market.  Do not assume that simply because you find a supplement that is not sold by prescription that it is safe, nor that because it is safe to use alone that it will be safe to use simultaneously with other supplements.  There are many instances when combining certain supplements with each other or taking certain supplements while you are on a medication could yield serious and dangerous results. Health professionals can provide to their patients with helpful advice and can address the concerns that you may have.  Your physician can go over any adverse side effects that may result from your use of a given supplement.  If your doctor is not able to help you, you may consider discussing both your medical history and your interest in specific supplements with a doctor that has more specific experience with L-Arginine, L-Citrulline and antioxidant supplements.

The history of L-Arginine (Nitric Oxide)

Posted by admin On March - 29 - 2009

Arginine was discovered in 1895.  Arginine is an amino acid that provides a wide range of benefits to the body.  Arginine plays an important role in the division of cells, boosting of one’s immune system, healing of wounds, and in the hormonal secretion process.  In 1998, the Nobel Prize was given to three American scientists who are attributed with discovering the role that L-Arginine plays in the production of nitric oxide.  Nitric oxide is so important because it is a dilator that helps the arteries to relax, thus allowing for the better flow of blood and less strain on the heart.  Also in 1998 a team of Italian researches made this connection between nitric oxide production and better blood flow when they reported that daily doses of L-Arginine given to patients reduced their systolic blood pressure.

Since the early 1990’s, more and more researchers and medical professionals have been experimenting with the cardiovascular health improvement possibilities of L-Arginine.  Many health professionals have tried L-Arginine supplementation themselves and have been so impressed with the results that they then recommend L-Arginine to their patients.  Today Hospitals often offer an L-Arginine supplement to those patients suffering from infectious wounds in order to speed their recovery time, thus reducing the risk of acquiring an infection.  Heart disease in America is the number one killer.  With the prospects of L-Arginine supplementation being as promising as they are the hardening of the arteries and build up on the arterial lining, the two most common factors in heart disease, could be reversed.

The ability that L-Arginine has to increase the production of nitric oxide means many good things to those who are suffering with the preliminary symptoms of heart disease.  For many in this situation who are taking an L-Arginine supplement, there is no longer a need for prescription blood pressure medication (or at least the dosage can be lowered).  Decreasing the need for blood pressure medication not only lends itself to being in better health as the cardiac patient, but avoiding the use of prescription drugs also allows the individual to avoid the potential side effects of those blood pressure medications.  And side effects could be both physically and mentally (i.e. depression) devastating.

The most recent discoveries related to L-Arginine are that it has the ability to help the body release needed hormones, increase lean muscle mass, speed the recovery of wounds, and boost the immune system.  Intimate benefits of decreased symptoms of impotence and improved female sexual function are also encouraging benefits that physicians and patients are discovering as a result of improved blood flow.  Recent evidence and research may also suggest that L-Arginine supplements can also help Alzheimer patients by slowing or even stopping the growth of tumors.

As was mentioned briefly, you can find L-Arginine in red meats, but this amino acid is also found in fish and chocolate.  If you want to go beyond merely providing your body with its basic L-Arginine benefits, you can talk with your doctor about supplements that you can use to make more L-Arginine available to your body. A typical supplemental dose of L-Arginine is about 2-5 grams a day (in some cases it is best when taken right before bed), although as much as 20 grams has been administered successfully.  However a minimum of 5 grams has been found to be the base line of a successfully effective dosage. The level of toxicity for L-Arginine is relatively low making it difficult to accidentally have too much, yet it is always wise to consult with your doctor and receive any medical conditions that you may have that could influence what a safe dosage is for you.

The benefits of D-Ribose

Posted by admin On March - 27 - 2009

Health is something that is very important to people and they are trying to discover many different ways to improve health.  Ribose is a five-carbon sugar that is found in ribonucleic acid.  It is used for many different purposes and is very important in the body.  Here is some more information to help you understand D Ribose better and how it can help you.

It is a sugar that is found in living cells and RNA containing viruses.  It can be made in the body and so is not considered an essential nutrient, but is still important.  It is essential for life though and most biological molecules contain it including ATP which is the main component used in energy production.  Because it is found in living organisms it is also taken into the body when we eat.  Recent research shows that high amount of this sugar present in the blood and in the body may have protective effects for the cardiovascular system.  D-Ribose is a solid, sweet and water soluble substance that is also sometimes referred to simply as ribose.  D-Ribose that is used in supplements is created from the fermentation of corn syrup.

It is used in the body to generate ATP (adenosine triphosphate) and there are theories that adding it to your diet will increase the rate at which ATP is produced which can also lead to an improvement in exercise and physical activity performance.  It is also said to result in faster muscle growth which is why it appeals to body builders and athletes.  ATP is constantly being made and used in the body and it is the basic molecule that helps us use the food we take in as energy for daily activities and exercise.  Energy is released from ATP when one of the phosphates is broken off from the ATP molecule.  When ribose is taken as a supplement, it bypasses the steps needed to recreate a part of the ATP which makes the process more efficient.  Studies have shown that ribose supplements can enhance cardiac energy levels and support cardiovascular metabolism.  They also suggest that supplementation can increase the tolerance of the cardio system to exercise induced fatigues, which would make it possible for people to exercise for longer periods of time or at more intense levels.  It is also said that the heart has more energy and is more efficient when levels of ribose are elevated in the blood.

It is also claimed that ribose can increase and improve antioxidant functions in the body.  Antioxidants are very important to protect people from degenerative diseases that can reduce the length of life and the enjoyment that is experienced during life.  Intense exercise can produce more free radicals and this is another reason ribose can help you live a better life.  It can help you exercise better and longer and also feel less of the effects from strenuous exercise.  Studies show that ribose can slow down or eliminate some of the effects of free radicals in the body.  It also supports healthy levels of energy in the heart and muscle tissue which allows people to heal faster and better.  It also supports recovery after exercise and helps the body to heal itself faster so that exercise can be done more quickly after exercise without feeling the effects of muscle fatigue.  Ribose can be used in many different ways to help the body improve functions and to live better.

L-Arginine has many health benefits, but how can you know if those are health benefits that you need or not? Well, in general, the greatest of these benefits are for those who are suffering from symptoms of heart or vessel disease.

Many times, the symptoms related to cardiovascular disease are severe, but avoidable. If you have the symptoms of cardiovascular disease, you probably will have to face the fact that your lifestyle must be altered in order to enjoy pain free, healthy existence. Imagine how uncomfortable it would be to have the everyday experience of chest pain, leg cramping, shortness of breath, difficulty walking, and fatigue.  If you have symptoms of heart disease, coronary artery blockages combines with the narrowing of arteries throughout the body, makes all of these painful symptoms very real for some.  If you or someone that is close to you, suffers from these heart related symptoms, know that you do not have to live in pain.  There are natural supplements available that might be able to help you.

You are a good candidate for an L-Arginine supplement if there is a history of heart disease in your family.  You are a great candidate for an L-Arginine supplement if you have the above mentioned symptoms but do not yet have heart disease.

Of course there are always exceptions that are made on an individual basis regarding who is and who is not a good candidate for an L-Arginine supplement.  For this reason, you should consult with your doctor before starting any type of dietary supplement program.  Talk with your doctor about any symptoms that you are currently experiencing as well as your medical history to determine if taking an L-Arginine supplement is safe for you.

If you have not yet experienced the health benefits of incorporating supplements into your diet, you are missing out.  Let’s use as an example the supplement in question; L-Arginine.  L-Arginine is a natural supplement in that it is an amino acid that is found naturally in the body.  Through the course of everyday life most of us neglect to give our bodies the nutrients needed and we begin to feel less than at our best.  Vitamins, minerals and amino acids that our bodies need to work at optimum levels become depleted.  We do not feel as good as we would if those levels were maintained.  By taking an L-Arginine supplement, you can replenish your body’s natural ability to fight off the symptoms of heart disease.  L-Arginine works to restore the body’s natural production of nitric oxide.  When nitric oxide production is replenished, blood flow is improved.  Improved blood flow translates into freer flowing arteries, no pain from blockages or constriction!

There is an additional advantage that L-Arginine can provide to men.  Studies have shown that the benefits that L-Arginine provides in improving blood flow are also advantageous men who suffer from erectile dysfunction.  As poor penile blood from is the number one cause of ED, patients found that taking an L-Arginine supplement could lower their symptoms of sexual impotence.

So, in summary, you are a good candidate for an L-Arginine supplement if you want to prevent serious problems like heart disease, and want to feel better and have more energy then you currently have.

Cardio Pulse Wave heart test: What is it measuring?

Posted by admin On March - 26 - 2009

Cardio Pulse Wave (CPW) uses the BPro device and A-PULSE CASP software. This is the state-of-the-art equipment, technology and software. Now learn what the measurements mean. This is somewhat technical so bear with me.

A-PULSE CASP is a revolutionary product patented by HealthSTATS International Pte Ltd. It is able to measure accurately the Central Aortic Systolic Pressure (CASP), which is the blood pressure at the root of the aorta. It is the only device which can be used in common clinical setting. CASP has been shown in many recent studies as an important determinant for strokes and CVS events. It has been validated via invasive study and achieved an accuracy (co-relation) R= 0.9917 independently. A-PULSE CASP is FDA and CE MDD approved. It is also being used in large drug trials by Pharmaceutical companies.

What is arterial pulse waveform?

When the left ventricle ejects blood into the aorta in systole, the perturbation generates a wave that initially travels through the arteries from the heart towards the arterial tree.

Pulse waveform has 2 components.
1) Forward travelling wave when the left ventricle contracts and
2) Reflected wave returning back from the peripheral.

Diagrammatic Representation of a Radial Arterial Pulse Wave

What is CASP (Central Aortic Systolic Pressure)?
This is the blood pressure at the root of the aorta or the largest artery in the body, as the blood is being pumped out of the heart. This pressure is called Central Aortic Systolic Pressure or CASP. CASP has been shown to be an important factor in the relation to strokes and cardiovascular events, more so than the brachial pressure, or the pressure at the arm commonly.

How to measure CASP?

Invasive method

This is direct measurement and has been considered as the most accurate method. To perform the measurement, a catheter must be inserted into the aortic root from brachial or femoral artery, which is obviously an invasive method and could result in complications (Fig. 1). This invasive method of measuring CASP is not available in clinical setting. However, A-PULSE CASP can be used in clinic and the accuracy has been validated against this invasive method, the result is R= 0.9917 (co-relation). (What this means, for those of you who are like me and don’t quite get the point, is the CPW is 99.17% as accurate as the cathater method!)

Fig. 1 Direct measurement of CAP using catheter

Non-invasive method

HealthSTATS (HS) invented a device named BPro which is able to capture radial pressure waveforms. Furthermore, HS developed a proprietary formula to derive central aortic systolic pressure (CASP) from the calibrated radial pressure waveform (Fig. 2).

Fig. 2 Non-invasive measurement of CASP using the Cardio Pulse Wave (which is the combination of HealthSTATS BPro device and A-PULSE software)

What is augmentation index?

The difference between the second and first systolic peaks expressed as a percentage of the pulse pressure.

What is the arterial compliance?

The ability of an artery to increase the volume in response to a given increase in blood pressure is called compliance.

What is pulse wave velocity?

PWV is the speed at which the pressure waveform travels (wave propagation) along the aorta and large arteries, during each cardiac cycle.

What is applanation tonometry?

The principle of applanation tonometry is that the force acting on the plunger is proportional to the pressure in the artery when where the artery surface is flattened.

Cub Pack Meeting, The Ladder of Death and one willing and one unwilling participant…

As Cubmaster, I have these crossovers we do for the cub scouts as they move up in the program through the different packs. I bring my ladder from home for the boys to do their crossovers on and call it ‘The Ladder of Death’…boys being boys LOVE it! Death is such a popular word to a male…although we misssed recording the boys going over it (we’ll get it next month, sorry) we were able to get the Webelos leader and the Bishop of our ward (Mormon term for a congregations ecclesiastical leader) to show us how to cross the Ladder of Death!

Please let me know if you find the videos or information here fun, interesting or of any value by commenting in the section below. The things I get comments on are the things I tend to do more of…have a great day and thanks for stopping by!

Want to learn the HOW of network marketing success?

Posted by admin On March - 23 - 2009

Today I met with some brilliant social media consultants (Chad and Josh at www.ignitehq.com) that really opened my mind to some great ideas in how we can use the internet to help others in our network marketing business. We brainstormed (their brains work better than mine as they are 2 decades younger and very bright) and came up with a couple of great ideas to help grow your business. Let me share one I have instituted immediately. (As a side note, these guys really do what they preach. They saw me on twitter, liked the content I was providing on my various sites, and called me asking to meet on Thursday last week. They found me on twitter. How cool is that? Powerful.)

This idea is, in my mind, the best and most brilliant use of twitter. What I am going to be doing is sending out twitter messages of how I am building my business to all the people who follow me on Twitter. These messages will be what I am doing all day to build my business. This will allow you to see what I do during the day to build my Synergy business. What it takes to be successful. What activities you should be engaged in.

Now if you are not a part of Synergy that is okay, you can still follow and will learn a lot about how to build your business. Marketing is marketing and learning more about this business of network marketing will help anyone in the business. However, if you are in Synergy you are going to get really valuable and useful information in the form of short messages. Things you can duplicate right now today, this minute, to build your business. I hope it is of real tangible value to you. Please let me know.

It is not a convenient undertaking, but most things of value rarely are. So please, make yourself one of the few who will step up to the plate and count yourself as a player. Swing the bat with me. You may hit a home run…most likely you will start with a few strikes and errors…not to worry, everybody has to start…and I mean all of us. The most important thing is to start. Commit today to start and make these short twitters I will be doing a part of starting correctly with the odds now in your favor.

You can follow me on twitter by clicking http://twitter.com/eric_glenn then set up an account with twitter.com (very easy to do), then follow me! This means you will then receive my short Twitter messages on the net or you can have them sent to your cell phone…I personally like the text messages from twitter when they are sent to my cell…Pretty practical, convenient and cool.

See you on twitter as I tweet the HOW of network marketing. Please join me.

Also, please comment on this and any other item you find useful….or not useful on this blog. Thank you for your support. Your friend, Eric Glenn
